Does the Nikon d300 have an auto setting?

I am using my Uncles Nikon d300, but I am going on a trip. If I had a stranger my camera to take pictures, is there an auto setting that they just point and shoot? Without knowing how to use the camera?

I know that the d40 and d90’s have an auto setting, not sure if the Nikon d300 have that setting or not.

Not precisely an auto setting, but pretty close. Press the mode button and Turn the command dial until you see the P appear. This is called the program mode, that lets the camera select basic exposure settings, but still lets the user change them to fine tune the shot. This is your best bet when letting someone else use the camera.

As a separate point… that is one awesome uncle you have. That is a top notch camera, i recommend you really read up on it if you want to take advantage of it’s capabilities on your trip.

Nikon D300 or nikon D90 ?

Im an amateur Photographer and was almost buying my dream camera the Nikon D300, but then several sources told me that the D90 Is same or even better,,,
Until know i had a Fuji S5600. I found the autofocus very slow and unsharp, the manual focus is useless. ( if you are interested, here is a link of my photos w the fuji http://picasaweb.google.com/agneslivia/Legjobbak?authkey=F7wLxxheqyY# )
I would like to know which nikon is a better option, if you have one of these Nikons what is the pro and cons that you experienced with it.

D300 has a superior 51 pt focusing system (D90 – 11 pt)
D300 6 frames per sec (fps) & 8 fps with a battery grip (D90 – 4.5 fps)
D300 weighs more & bigger (D90 – smaller & lighter)
D300 accepts AI AF AFD AFS lenses (D90 AF AFD AFS)

The D90 is only better because it’s lighter and smaller. Some people think the controls are easier to operate.

Which lenses will have a wider angle with Nikon D300?

I want AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED (1.7x) lens. On the Nikon website it says that the angle is 114 but with DX cameras only 90! Does that mean that I will not get the ultra wide angle with this lens using D300 and only will be able to achieve it with D3? If so, does that mean that old AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED (2.0x) will give me a wider angle (99) with D300?

You are correct on all counts. The D300, like all pre-D3 Nikon DSLRs, uses an APS-C size sensor and you need to multiply all focal lengths by 1.5 to get the equivalent focal length of a full-frame or 135 film camera.

The 14-24 on a D300 will be the equivalent of a 21-36mm on a full-frame/film camera, and the 12-24 will be the equivalent of an 18-36mm (of course on the D3, the 12-24 can only be used in DX 5-megapixel mode and will give the same angle as on the D300).

I want to buy a Nikon, (D90, D300 or D300 S).

1. What is the real difference among them? is there a significant difference in the FINAL RESULT on the picture? less noise in D300? or is "just" a functional diffenrence in the camera?

2. And about lenses: Because D300 camera is full frame, Does it only works with special lenses? If I set in D300 the lens that comes with D90? Would it work?

D90, D300 and D300s in pictures they have are NO different because they all have the same ISO 100-6400. The D300 is NOT a full frame camera. Yes FX lens will fit and work with the D300 and D90. If you put a FX lens on a DX (D300, D90) body your 12 megapixel will be around 5-6 megapixel.

I heard that early Nikon D300s had a dead battery problem – certainly not a nice surprise to have after buying expensive camera.

I heard that Nikon fixed it with the firmware update, do you know if latest production models are already patched to the latest firmware??? Or does one have to update it to the latest version immediately after they get it?

A new Nikon D300 should come with the latest firmware, it depends how long it has been sat at the store for.

The firmware is extremely easy to update to the latest though so I wouldn’t worry if I was you.

The D300 is a great camera.

ive been looking to see if there r problems with the nikon d300 and ive found some posts where it has problems the battery and in low light. and also that it doesnt focus that fast with certain lenses. I’d need the camera to be able to work with my f/1.4 50m af-s for concerts i go to.

I’ve got the D300 and it works beautifully in low light. AF isn’t 100% if it’s too dark to see, but it will focus in very little light.

Make sure you have the latest firmware update as it improves the camera’s focusing performance.

I really need a camera with at least 12 mp, that will take very good detailed shots that can be blown up. I will be using the camera for many things including portraits, detailed pictures of jewelry, scenery pictures, live band performances, etc.

Also can anyone recommend some good lenses to go along? where is the best/lowest price place to purchase the camera and supplies?

You got a good response from photoace and a fatuous response from another poster who seems to think that he can read people’s minds and predict their future, but what you do need to realise is that your wish-list is a little broad.

All but the live band work it quite easily handled, but shooting under low light needs both a camera with good high ISO performance and a very fast (and VERY expensive) lens to get detail that can be enlarged without degradation of the image. Another issue is that using a good DSLR with an expensive lens in a concert/live band venue can be risky unless you are approved by the organisers. Many won’t grant you entry if you are carrying what looks like "professional" equipment.

One option is to use a quality P&S with a very fast lens for your live band work, something that will cost far less than a single lens suitable for low light for your DSLR. Contrary to the oft chanted mantra heard here, they do now have P&S cameras with much lower pixel density, and higher ISO low noise performance. Not as good as a good DSLR, but certainly good enough to produce good images in concerts etc. Some have quality Zeiss/Leica zoom lenses starting as low as F2.0 with usable 1600 ISO.

Which one would be the best camera?? Nikon D700, Nikon D90, Nikon D300 or CANON 7D?

Im currently getting my feet in the business of photography and dont know which camera to buy. I previously owned a Canon XSi but used it for enjoying my hobby. I would want to shoot portraits mostly and do editorial/journalistic photography. Which one would be best??? Please help! There are so much great cameras and I’ve narrowed it down to these 4.

Nikon D300 or D300s, with 17-55mm f/2.8 DX VR AF-S. Also you’ll need a medium telephoto for head-only portaitures, the 50mm f/1.8 AF-D or the 85mm f/1.8 AF-D will work well.

Also you may go with a full-frame body if you can afford it…. a Nikon D3 with 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S and a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR AF-S is the best for weddings. Also a 85mm f/1.4 AF-D would be fine for wonderful "bokeh"s.

Having two bodies, with one lens on each, is way better because you would not want to lose time changing the lens.

I’ve been practicing photography for about a year now. I know most of the basics and would like to get another camera. I shoot basically everything (porttraits, landscapes, etc). However I really want to experiment around with macro shots.

The point being…which do you think is better for me:: Nikon D300 or a Canon Rebel XTi???

I’ve heard fantastic reviews about them both and can’t decide.

People ask if Nikon is better than Canon all the time and we say that it would be the same as trying to decide if Ford was better than Chevy. Your question is like asking if a Lincoln MKZ is better than a Chevy Malibu. Apples and oranges, if you know what I mean.

We don’t know a thing about you as a photographer so it would be hard to answer.

If you know how to use a fine DSLR, then the D300 is head and shoulders above the XTi. If you want those "helpful" modes that are identified with icons of a little running man, a mountain, and a flower, then you’d better stick to the XTi. Or a D90…

Either camera is capable of producing any kind of images you wish to make.

We need to know more about you to say which is a better choice for you.
