since nikon released the D700, how soon to expect a price drop for the D300?

the D700 was released July 11th here in the US and i am just curious if anyone is aware (insider info??) that they might drop the D300 price?

The D700 is a poor man’s D3, not a rich man’s D300. It probably wont affect the D300 price point at all…

I’ve got Nikon D300 for a little more than half a year now, and it’s price is going down at the moment.

The price of Nikon D3 is also going down as well. I like the D 300 a lot, as I can just use the automatic functions and take great picture without having to think much. Now that the price of D3 is going down, should I buy additional digital camera. I mean I’m not parting with D300 for any reason, but thinking of adding one more. Any advices?
Thanks Nathan. I’ve bought the Nikon SB800 already eventhough the D300 has a pop up flash.
The thing is I love D300 auto ISO function that allows me to take picture in really low light environment, with sometimes up to ISO 3200 zoom shot without any flashlight. I don’t really like the picture taken with flash light: it’s really flattten out the objects in the picture.
The thing is I own also Nikon S700. By comparison, yes it’s a whole different world of photography, but yet again D300 do a lot better than S700. That makes me thing whether it’s worth to buy D3. I’ve only taken a couple of shots on the test camera but not have one when I can go around shooting pictures with it. That’s why I ask whether it’s worth to get a new one.

HI Ice Cube…. you know you have a very interesting question and I can see why you are thinking… price is going down here, and the D3 is getting closer to a professional digital camera that I can afford… But you have a very nice camera. Many, many photographers are opting for the less expensive pro-sumer – or low end professional cameras that do an excellent job for them. And I think you should follow this line of thinking. Buying the D3, will be a nice upgrade… but for how long? With the D300, you are currently up to date with Nikon technology… When the new technology comes out, you will be in a better position to upgrade to that if you don’t have a $4500.00 investment that you feel you have to get your money out of. Truly… it is MUCH better to keep using the D300 for the time being. You have a little money to play with for camera equipment?? Don’t be thinking cameras anyway… Be thinking fabulous lenses. Cameras tend to come and go with the ever increasing new technology… but your lenses…. the tool that actually affects the image quality the most, will serve you for a long, long time. $4500.00 will buy you a couple of lenses to be envied by many a photographer. It is a fact that it is much better to have a lower level camera and a high quality expensive lens than the other way around. If you are really happy with your D300 and it sounds like you are… be satisfied for the time being… either spend the money on another (or two) quality lens or wait to see what the D400 (?) is going to offer… when it comes out. Hope I was able to give you something to consider… And thanks for reading.

Nikon Launches the D3000 and D300s

Fifty years have passed since Nikon launched their SLR F-Series in 1959, and today they announced the launch of two DSLR cameras, the D3000 and the D300s.

The two cameras cater to opposite ends of the spectrum of DSLR buyers. While the D3000 caters to the casual DSLR user, geared towards ease of use, the D300s is essentially their next in line after their D300, targeted towards the professional photographer.

The D3000 comes with a new “Guide Mode” aimed to make it simpler for the amateur to set up their camera for the best shots in any condition. It features an effective resolution of 10.2 megapixels, with a 11 point autofocus system. The D3000 also comes with the ability for edit images directly on the camera, and allows for basic retouching effects to be applied without the use of a computer. The D3000 is priced at 30,450.

The D300s comes with a resolution of 12.3 effective megapixels and a 51 point autofocus system. The camera supports HD video capture, and continuous shooting at up to 7 fps. An interesting feature is the support for dual storage devices CF and SD memory cards, and allows using both cards at the same time. The device can be set to use one card for primary storage and the other as “overflow” capacity, or can capture the same image to both cards as a backup measure, also it can use once card for storing the RAW image, and the other for storing the jpegs. The D300s will come at a price of Rs. 1,09,950.
